On Tuesday, 21 May 2013, we visited Frits once again. This time, Frits showed us various parts of the drivetrain that he has removed, and then replaced them (with clean, modified and new ones!). He also showed us the paint samples.
The Golf Cart.
After much discussion, we have decided that we will be painting the car in the top colour (Paprika) and the bottom half in the gold colour on the right. The pinstripe/coachline, just below the chrome moulding stretching the length of the car will be in the same colour as the interior upholstery (Beige).
Boot filled with all the parts from the car.
All interior trimming/moulding/wood capping/seats has been stripped and sent to their respective restorers & repairers. Carpet has been removed, revealing some rust spots in the floor pan. All the electrical components in the door, headliner, dash, etc. will be either restored, replaced or repaired to their functional and operational state.
Operation time!
- Some of the panels surrounding the engine bay has been repainted in the same black paint.
- Height control rams located on each side of the bay have been removed, reconditioned and repainted. - The water pump located behind the fan has been reconditioned, belts have also been replaced.
- Engine head covers will be removed, grounded down, sand blasted and then powder coated to bring back the shine in the RR stamp.
- When inspected, the thermostat housing was rusted, its bolts were about to snap in half. All has been reconditioned and new bolts will be used.
- The electric fan has been retrofitted to the reconditioned radiator so as to help cool the engine quicker when idling in those hot WA summer days! The fan will automatically switch on when engine temperatures start to rise.
- Underneath, the transmission is currently cooled by the coolant from the engine/radiator. Frits has deemed that this method is not effective and he will be fitting an air cooler adjacent to the transmission to aid in cooling.
- The two side indicators and parking lamp housing has not been removed as the bolts holding them in are stuck, possibly fused to the body. They will somehow be removed before paint. No more dodgy paint jobs!
Photographs by Frits:
Old shock absorbers from the car. All four of these have been replaced with newer shock absorbers and springs.
A huge dent in caused by a previous repairer attempting to remove the power steering pump.
Various engine components rusted and need replacement. The height control rams (black cylindrical components) have been reconditioned
A missing rubber seal with the fuel line passing through.
Corroded electrical connections.
Air ducting has rust spots all over. Frits has repainted some parts of the firewall as well as the ducting.
Radiator on its way to being reconditioned. The last photo shows the overflow tank of the radiator, situated at the frontmost part of the engine bay. Its cap has been bolted in incorrectly and thus some coolant can be seen leaking out.
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE SHADOW IN HER NEW COAT OF PAINT!
